From 40ft shipping container to digital classroom
The idea behind the DigiTruck is simple: if access to digital education is limited, bring the classroom to the people who need it.
For Close the Gap International, CBOX modified a 40ft shipping container to create the foundation for a mobile ICT classroom. The container was fitted with windows, a steel personnel door and a durable floor, creating a functional space that could subsequently be equipped as a classroom.
A separate technical area was incorporated into the design, while the interior provides space for multiple workstations and a presentation area. The exterior was finished in fresh white, helping to reflect rather than absorb as much of the strong sunlight in the regions where the DigiTruck would be deployed.
Designed for digital education
A conventional classroom stays in one place. The DigiTruck was created to do the opposite.
After the CBOX modifications, Close the Gap further equipped the container for its specific purpose, including insulation and a solar power installation. This allows the mobile classroom to operate in locations where access to conventional infrastructure and electricity may be limited.
Once equipped with computers and learning technology, the container becomes a complete environment where people can develop digital skills and gain experience with ICT and technology. And because the classroom started life as a shipping container, it can be transported to different locations. The project is a strong example of what container modification can achieve: one 40ft steel box transformed into a mobile space for education, technology and opportunity.
