From Empty Car Park to Temporary Shelter
During the COVID-19 pandemic, social distancing reduced capacity at existing homeless shelters. The Salvation Army needed additional temporary accommodation in Almere that could be set up quickly while providing a safe environment for residents and staff.
An unused car park at an office site on Wisselweg in central Almere provided the space. CBOX supplied and installed 75 container units there: 45 for people experiencing homelessness and 30 for offices, kitchens and sanitary facilities used by staff and in the shelter’s operation.
75 Units, One Functional Location
Speed mattered in this project. CBOX cabin units can be deployed quickly and combined into larger temporary buildings. Their modular wall panels can be removed or repositioned to connect units and adapt the layout. The same system therefore accommodated sleeping areas, sanitary facilities, kitchens and offices across the site.
The temporary shelter was designed to operate around the clock, with Salvation Army staff on site 24 hours a day to support residents. It met an urgent need during an exceptional period and showed how modular accommodation can add capacity quickly, then be reconfigured or removed when no longer required.
